News from the L.M. Montgomery Institute

New Deadline for LMM and Gender Conference Call for Papers: August 31 2015

The Call for Papers for the L.M. Montgomery and Gender conference has been extended! The new deadline is now, 31 August 2015.

Once again here are the highlights:

Call for Papers: L..M. Montgomery and Gender

From Anne’s initial iconic and heartrending cry in Anne of Green Gables—“You don’t want me because I’m not a boy”—to the pressure on young men to join the war effort in Rilla of Ingleside, and from the houseful of supportive co-eds in Anne of the Island to the tyrannical grandmother in Jane of Lantern Hill, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s work highlights gender roles: how formative and deterministic they seem, and yet mutable they may be. Much Montgomery criticism of the past several decades has regarded her work from a feminist and gender studies perspective.

Beautiful prints available!

Those who attended the recent "L.M. Montgomery & War" conference at UPEI in June 2014 will be pleased to know that Anne Victoria Photography has posted an online gallery of images of photos taken at the conference and around Prince Edward Island. Prints can be ordered through Anne Victoria Photography and part of the proceeds will be coming back to support the LMMI. See a few stunning examples below!

June 20th 2013 Anniversary and Book Launch

We're looking forward to seeing many "kindreds" on Thursday, June 20th at 7PM as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the LMMI, honour two important new donations to the Institute's research collections, and officially launch Anne around the World: L.M. Montgomery and Her Classic (Jane Ledwell and Jean Mitchell, eds.). Click here for more details!

Friends of the LM Montgomery Institute

The Friends of the LM Montgomery Institute supports our ongoing work through fundraising and other activities. All monies raised by the Friends go directly to Institute projects; please click here to learn how you can help the Friends help us today!

About the Friends

The Friends is an all-volunteer group drawn from the ranks of Montgomery scholars and admirers across North America. This photo shows (most of) the dedicated group who came together to form the first Friends' Board at the LM Montgomery Conference in Charlottetown in June 2012.

More Media (Traditional and Social)!

The PEI news media continues to take a healthy interest in the Conference and things Montgomery:

- CBC PEI has stories about the Friends of the LMMI and the Anne in China initiative;

- The Guardian (Charlottetown) captured some of the enjoyment of the Conference's first (full) day with this photo.

Friends of the LM Montgomery Institute on CBC

The newly-formed Friends of the LM Montgomery Institute, and their inaugural fundraiser, a Silent Auction running during the Conference, are featured on CBC-TV Charlottetown's Compass newscast (obligatory viewing for all Islanders and Islanders-at-heart). The Friends can be seen in the coveted "You're Watching Compass" intro spot, with the full story at about the 17min50sec mark. Head to http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/Canada/PEI/ and look for the "Compass June 20" video file.

Thanks to Ryan Hicks and Denis Calnan (and the Friends themselves, of course) for a great story.

UPDATE: Epperly Plaza Opening a Grand Success

Though not, technically, a Conference event, Wednesday morning's Epperly Plaza Dedication was a huge success, with the sun breaking through at just the right moment, and nearly 100 people (including many Conference attendees) on hand. Betsy gave a beautiful, heartfelt speech dedicating the space to important women in her life, including her mother and (of course) Maud. It was wonderful to see so many Kindreds on hand, and we're excited to see more of you in the days ahead!

PEI Media -- Conference Coverage

We note, with pleasure and appreciation, the interest shown by Prince Edward Island media in the Conference -- before it's even begun!

-- The Guardian newspaper has this story on its Website, highlighting young international scholars attending the Conference.

-- Arts and entertainment journal The Buzz has this piece on Montgomery's "cultural memory".

-- CBC-TV Charlottetown's Compass supper-hour newscast included a short interview on June 19 with Conference Co-Chair Simon Lloyd.
