title The Charlottetown Boyhood of Robert Harris
creator Robert C. Tuck
subject Island Magazine
subject Prince Edward Island Museum
description "The child is father of the man," wrote William Wordsworth, and it is always fascinating to look back into the childhood of a famous person to try to trace the signs of future greatness. But this is not always possible, for the lives of children usually go unrecorded. Such was not the case with Robert Harris, Canada's leading portrait painter, who grew up in Charlottetown more than one hundred years ago. Over a period of ten years, from the time Robert was seven, his mother Sarah wrote every fortnight to his grandmother, Martha Harris, in Wales. The letters chronicle the doings of Robert and his brothers and sisters in intimate detail.
