| description | Wherever man has first set foot, he has blazed a trail for others to follow and to improve. So it was in Prince Edward Island. Roads have played an integral role in the development of the province. Along with the sea, the Island's early roads provided the necessary network for settlement and commerce. They took farmers to market and merchants to their business, clergy to their flock and doctors to their pat ients. Communication was only as fast as a fair wind or the worst road. Although our records for these beginnings are sparse, and sometimes conflicting, much can be inferred or verified from them. It is with the help of such records that we can retrace the development of some early Island roads. | |
