| description | In late October, 1824, Colonel John Ready stepped ashore in Charlottetown to assume the duties of Lieutenant- Governor from the recently departed Charles Douglas Smith. He found Charlottetown a presentable little town, with wide streets, a scattering of unpretentious houses, and a few public buildings centred around a large square. The harvest was in, and farmers and townsfolk flocked to the market house. Some farmers came on foot, laden with their produce, others arrived in carts which bumped over the rutted streets, scattering noisy geese along the way. Winter was approaching, and everyone was busy preparing for long months of isolation. | |
