Nelly the Bear

Nelly the Bear [i]

Beside a little swamp in the woods of the Bull Creek Road can be found an indent in the ground. On closer observation the indent is an old foundation built of sandstones, now largely covered by moss. Nearby an old stone wall can be found. It, too, is now covered over, with several trees having taking root on top of the old wall.

It is said that the lady who once lived in the house there in the early 1800's was attacked by a bear, tearing her scalp off. She lived, but was badly scarred for the rest of her life. From then on, she would be known as "Nelly the Bear".
